Monica D. Traystman, Ph.D.

Dr. Monica Traystman is the President of Healthy Spirit, Inc., a wellness company that develops and presents seminars, workshops and retreats that promote and maintain a balanced mind, body and spirit. Inner Light Coaching is a professional coaching service that provides a combined program of coaching and wellness activities for executive business professionals on an individual and group basis.

Academic Medicine Career
Following her baccalaureate education, Dr. Traystman was trained as a cytotechnologist at The Johns Hopkins School of Cytotechnology, and held both national and international certifications. As a Senior Associate Cytotechnologist, she contributed to the clinical diagnostic service and research, in addition to pursuing her teaching duties as an Associate Educational Coordinator. During this time she also obtained her Master's degree, and was chosen to become a member of the Cytotechnology Certification Examination Committee of the American Society of Clinical Pathology. She was active in the area of cytotechnology for 15 years, until she returned to graduate school. At that time, Dr. Traystman contributed to the development of a mouse model of heart disease that was initiated by Coxsackie B3 virus. During this time she was chosen to become a member of the Sigma Xi Research Honor Society. Following her Ph.D. degree, Dr. Traystman received training in human molecular genetics for a variety of single-gene disorders in the diagnostic laboratory of the Department of Pediatrics at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She continued this work when she came to the University of Nebraska Medical Center as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Microbiology in 1989. Between 1989 and 1995, she established the first molecular diagnostic service for hemophilia (Factor VIII), Factor V deficiency, muscular dystrophy, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis. From 1994 to 1999, she developed an active research program in breast cancer. During this time she was also the Focus Leader of the Molecular Studies in Breast Cancer Focus Group in the Cancer Center and a LEAD faculty member for the National Breast Cancer Coalition. In addition, she held courtesy appointments in the departments of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Eppley Institute of Cancer Research.

Business Career
In July of 1999, Dr. Traystman began a new career through Healthy Spirit, Inc.. Her company offers seminars, workshops and retreats in the areas of complementary/integrative medicine, wellness and professional coaching.. She has been certified by Jack Canfield, co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series, as a Self Esteem and Peak Performance Seminar Facilitator. She has been certified as a Primordial Sound Mediation Instructor by Drs. Deepak Chopra and David Simon of The Chopra Center for Well Being in LaJolla, CA. To complement her meditation practice, Dr. Traystman has been is a certified as a Reiki Master in the Usui lineage by Joyce Swanson in Omaha, NE. Dr. Traystman also studied with Jonathan Goldman, founder of the Sound Healers Association and President of Spirit Music, in sound healing and music therapy, and with Dr. Roy Martina in emotional integration techniques.

In August of 2000, Dr. Traystman was certified in Hatha yoga in the Svaroopa style by Rama Berch, Founder and Director, Master Yoga Academy in La Jolla, CA and past President of the Yoga Alliance. She is currently continuing her studies in La Jolla to obtain an advanced teacher certificaiton and to become a yoga therapist.

Another current interest of Dr. Traystman's is training in both Western and Eastern astrology. She has studied Western astrology through an Internship program with Linda Brady (Baltimore, MD), founder of the International Center for Creative Choices and internationally recognized astologer, author and holistic teacher. To complement these studies, she has completed training in Levels I and II of Jyotish or Vedic astrology studying with Marc Boney and Brent BecVar at The Chopra Center.

Another endeavor of Dr. Traystman involved her first book entitled, "Wise Women Speak -- 20 Ways To Turn Stumbling Blocks Into Stepping Stones." Released in December 2001, this remarkable effort by 20 women to share their incredible stories of challenge and triumph provides compelling and authentic models of empowerment for all women. Each woman honestly shares experiences straight from her heart to reach out to others and let them know that with each of life's challenges, we grow wiser as we transform and smooth out stumbling blocks into stepping stones.

In 2002, Inner Light Coaching, a new division of Healthy Spirit, Inc. was established in La Jolla, CA. This new service provides professional coaching to business executives and their employees. As an added benefit to a coaching program, Dr. Traysman also designs integrated corporate spiritual wellness programs. The synergistic effect of coaching and a weekly wellness program have resulted in dramatic and health promoting benefits for her clients! Executives have seen the results through improved productivity, self image, energy level and dramatic changes in relationships among employees and in relationship with their clients.

Dr. Traystman is a member of the Coach University community, Coachville community, San Diego Professional Coaches Association, Professional Mentors and Coaches Alliance, and Shared Vision Network.
